Dr Jitendra Singh Reviews IMD’s Multi-Hazard Early Warning DSS and ‘Mausamgram’ Platform
New Delhi: Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr Jitendra Singh, on Sunday visited the India Meteorological Department (IMD) headquarters and reviewed the in-house developed Web-GIS-based Multi-Hazard Early Warning Decision Support System (DSS).
In a statement, the Ministry of Earth Sciences said the Minister lauded IMD’s progress in developing indigenous, technology-driven, and citizen-centric weather forecasting systems, which enhance disaster preparedness and public safety nationwide.
Dr Singh highlighted that the DSS has led to an estimated cost saving of ₹250 crore, by removing dependency on foreign vendors and eliminating an annual maintenance expense of ₹5.5 crore — a significant step towards self-reliance under the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.
He also reviewed “Mausamgram” (Har Har Mausam, Har Ghar Mausam) — a citizen-oriented platform providing hyperlocal weather forecasts at the village level. The platform offers hourly forecasts for 36 hours, three-hourly forecasts for the next five days, and six-hourly forecasts for up to ten days.
Citizens can access weather information using a PIN code, location name, or by selecting their state, district, block, and gram panchayat. Available in all official Indian languages, Mausamgram ensures inclusive access to timely and accurate weather updates.
The IMD has overhauled its forecast and warning generation process, enabling real-time alerts and improving accuracy by 15–20%, while extending the lead period from 5 to 7 days and cutting forecast preparation time by about three hours.
During his interaction with IMD officials, Dr Singh suggested integrating AI-driven tools into Mausamgram to enhance accessibility and user experience. He also emphasised strengthening the Multi-Hazard Early Warning System to provide citizens with clear, actionable alerts that aid disaster prevention and preparedness.
The Minister congratulated IMD for winning the National Award for e-Governance 2025 at the 28th National Conference on e-Governance in Visakhapatnam for its outstanding digital innovation through the Multi-Hazard Early Warning DSS.
He further commended IMD’s achievements under the Special Swachhata Program, including the disposal of old files and e-waste, which generated ₹30 lakh in revenue and cleared 600 sq. metres of office space.
Earlier, Dr Singh participated in the Special Swachhata Program 5.0 at IMD headquarters, Mausam Bhavan, where he planted a sapling under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative and felicitated 50 “Safai Mitras” for their dedicated service.
The Minister also reviewed the progress of Mission Mausam, which envisions enhanced forecasting capabilities by 2030 through the installation of advanced meteorological instruments. The initiative aims to achieve 5×5 km-scale severe weather forecasts, dynamic impact-based forecasting, and risk-based early warnings—ensuring that early alerts reach every household by 2030, fulfilling the vision of “Har Har Mausam, Har Ghar Mausam.”
