Srinagar: Leader of Opposition Sunil Kumar Sharma on Monday launched a sharp attack on the Congress party, calling it a “puppet” of the National Conference (NC) and alleging that Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah was imposed on Congress MLAs as Chief Minister in 1975 following his release from jail.
Speaking to reporters, the BJP leader said the Congress has no independent political standing in Jammu and Kashmir.
“Congress doesn’t have its own identity here. It functions as a mere extension of the National Conference, blindly following decisions made by the NC leadership,” Sharma said, commenting on the party’s decision to withdraw from the Rajya Sabha elections after being offered what he termed a “risky seat” by the NC.
He further claimed that history reflected Congress’s subservience to NC leadership. “In 1975, Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah was released from jail and imposed on Congress MLAs as Chief Minister. Even today, all Congress decisions are dictated by NC. Despite repeated humiliation, the Congress continues to act without self-respect,” Sharma added.
