SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday conducted large-scale search operations across several areas of south Kashmir’s Shopian district, focusing on the residences of former Hurriyat members and individuals previously linked to the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI).

According to official sources, the coordinated raids began early in the morning as part of an ongoing drive against those suspected of engaging in activities harmful to national security. Multiple locations across villages and town areas were searched under heightened security arrangements.

Sources said the operation aimed to “curb anti-national activities and keep track of individuals with past connections to separatist or extremist groups.” They added that documents, electronic devices, and other materials recovered during the raids are being examined for potential evidence of unlawful activity.

“These searches are preventive in nature and intended to maintain peace and stability in the district,” a police officer said. “We are acting on specific intelligence inputs indicating attempts by certain individuals to reactivate underground networks or circulate propaganda,” the official added.

Authorities confirmed that those whose homes were searched had been under observation for some time due to their alleged association with banned organizations or previous involvement in separatist movements.

Officials further said similar operations will continue in other parts of Shopian in the coming days as part of efforts to reinforce law and order and prevent any disturbance to public peace.
