New York: India has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2026–2028 term, marking its seventh tenure on the global rights body, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, announced on Wednesday.

In a post on X, Harish expressed gratitude to all member states for their support, emphasizing that the election reflects India’s steadfast commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms.

“India was elected to the Human Rights Council for the term 2026–28 @UN for the seventh time today. Thank all delegations for their overwhelming support. This election reflects India’s unwavering commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms. We look forward to serving this objective during our tenure,” he said.

Established in 2006 by the UN General Assembly, the Human Rights Council is the principal intergovernmental body responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. Comprising 47 Member States, the Council serves as a multilateral forum to address violations, respond to human rights emergencies, and recommend measures to strengthen protection mechanisms globally.

The Permanent Mission of India to the UN highlighted that India’s engagement with the United Nations is rooted in its commitment to multilateralism and dialogue, viewing them as essential tools for addressing global challenges and achieving shared goals.

As a founding member of the UN, India has consistently upheld the principles and purposes of the Charter and contributed significantly to the work of various UN agencies and specialized programmes.

The statement further reaffirmed India’s resolve to collaborate with all Member States to promote peace, sustainable development, poverty eradication, environmental protection, climate action, counter-terrorism, disarmament, human rights, health security, migration management, cyber and outer space governance, and reformed multilateralism—all within the spirit of cooperation and inclusivity.
