Jammu: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fulfil his promise of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, expressing hope that the commitment would be honoured soon.

Addressing a press conference on the first anniversary of his government, Abdullah said the National Conference (NC) remains dedicated to delivering on its election promises.

“We had hoped that the Centre would restore statehood within the first year of our government’s tenure, but that has not happened. I request the prime minister and his team to keep their word and grant statehood to Jammu and Kashmir,” Abdullah said.

He added that his government had already taken steps in this direction, including passing a resolution seeking restoration of statehood.

Reiterating his government’s focus on public welfare, the Chief Minister said, “We are committed to fulfilling every promise we made before the elections. When we sought people’s votes, it was for a full five-year term, not just one year. I urge everyone to judge our performance at the end of the term.”
