Javid Ahmad Dar inaugurates two-day National Seminar on Scientific Honey Beekeeping at IUST

AWANTIPORA: Minister for Agriculture Production, Rural Development & Panchayati Raj, Cooperative and Election Departments, Javid Ahmad Dar today inaugurated a two-day National Seminar on “Scientific Honey Beekeeping Integrated with Oilseed Mission” at the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora.

Speaking as the Chief Guest, the Minister lauded IUST’s efforts in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, particularly initiatives that connect science, technology, and socio-economic development. He underlined the economic and ecological importance of beekeeping in boosting agricultural productivity, conserving biodiversity, and strengthening rural livelihoods.

The Minister also toured the i-Factory Lab, Design and Development Lab, Fab Lab, and Ultratech Cement Lab, commending the university’s focus on technology-driven solutions. He assured full government support for IUST’s innovation-led initiatives aimed at advancing agri-tech development.

In his address, Vice Chancellor IUST, Prof. Shakil A. Romshoo, highlighted the university’s vibrant innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, reaffirming its commitment to transforming ideas into practical solutions. He noted that Kashmir’s diverse biodiversity and favorable climate make it ideal for high-quality honey production, offering immense potential for export-oriented MSME growth.

Prof. Vikas Nanda from the Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology (SLIET), Punjab, shared insights on advancements in apiculture research and technological interventions to enhance honey quality and production efficiency.

Prof. Zafar U. Ahmad, Founder and CEO of the Academy for Global Business Advancement (AGBA), Washington D.C, emphasized the importance of branding, quality enhancement, and global promotion of Kashmiri honey to establish it as a recognized international product.

Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. A. H. Moon, appreciated the seminar’s role in bridging research and practical application, while Prof. Parvez A. Mir, CEO of CIED-IUST Foundation, in his welcome address, outlined the initiatives of the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development (CIED) in nurturing skill-based and sustainable enterprises.

Sponsored by Ni-MSME Hyderabad, the seminar brings together experts, policymakers, researchers, and entrepreneurs to deliberate on the scientific, economic, and entrepreneurial dimensions of apiculture and its alignment with the National Oilseed Mission.

The event was also attended by Registrar Prof. Abdul Wahid Makhdoomi, Deans, Directors, faculty members, students, and a large number of beekeepers from various districts of Kashmir.
