Magnitude 4.0 Earthquake Jolts Pakistan for Second Consecutive Day
Islamabad: A 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck Pakistan on Sunday, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported.
The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, which increases the likelihood of aftershocks and stronger ground shaking.
In a post on X, the NCS stated: “EQ of M: 4.0, On: 19/10/2025, 11:12:04 IST, Lat: 36.69 N, Long: 72.78 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Pakistan.”
This follows another tremor of the same magnitude recorded on Saturday in the same region at a similar depth. The NCS had posted details of that quake as well: “EQ of M: 4.0, On: 18/10/2025, 16:21:06 IST, Lat: 36.69 N, Long: 72.89 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Pakistan.”
Experts note that shallow earthquakes are typically more dangerous because their seismic waves travel shorter distances to the surface, causing more intense shaking and potentially greater damage.
Pakistan lies in one of the world’s most seismically active regions, intersected by several major fault lines. Provinces such as Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan sit along the southern edge of the Eurasian plate, while Sindh and Punjab are positioned on the northwestern edge of the Indian plate — making them prone to frequent tremors.
Balochistan, in particular, is located near the active boundary between the Arabian and Eurasian plates, making it highly susceptible to seismic events.
One of the most powerful earthquakes in Pakistan’s history was the 1945 Balochistan earthquake, which measured 8.1 on the Richter scale — the strongest ever recorded in the country.
