JAMMU: Continuing its mission to modernize urban infrastructure and streamline the rehabilitation of street vendors, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) organized a transparent draw of lots for the allotment of newly constructed modern kiosks at Below Gummat Steps, Jammu.

Earlier, 82 old kiosks at the site were dismantled to make way for the development of a new, well-planned vending zone. The initiative aims to provide small traders and vendors with hygienic, aesthetically designed, and durable kiosks equipped with modern amenities.

The newly built kiosks are available in three standardized sizes — 4×10 ft, 6×10 ft, and 8×10 ft — to suit different business needs. Constructed using contemporary techniques, these kiosks ensure better ventilation, uniform design, and enhanced durability, thereby contributing to the city’s organized and visually appealing urban landscape.

The allotment process was conducted in a fair and transparent manner under the chairmanship of the JMC Commissioner, in the presence of Joint Commissioners (Revenue & Enforcement, Administration, Works), Deputy Commissioner (S), Chief Accounts Officer, Deputy Legal Remembrancer, and Chief Revenue Officer.

Member Legislative Assembly (Jammu East) Yudhvir Sethi graced the event as the Chief Guest. He appreciated JMC’s transparent process and lauded the initiative for aligning with Smart City principles by balancing urban beautification with sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Speaking on the occasion, the Commissioner, JMC, emphasized that the new kiosks reflect the Corporation’s commitment to inclusive urban renewal and vendor welfare. The Commissioner also announced upcoming beautification measures for the area — including installation of sitting benches, placement of decorative flower pots, and the development of an open cafeteria on the terrace to serve visitors — transforming the site into a vibrant, people-friendly space.

Beneficiaries who had earlier been displaced due to the removal of old kiosks expressed gratitude to the JMC for providing them with modern vending spaces through a transparent process. They hailed the move as a progressive step toward ensuring both livelihood security and dignity for small traders.

Reaffirming its commitment, the Jammu Municipal Corporation stated that similar modernization and beautification projects will be undertaken in other parts of the city to enhance Jammu’s overall urban experience.

All allottees received their kiosk keys and allotment orders upon completion of necessary formalities as per rules.
