Five gamblers held in Shopian; ₹45,000 recovered during police raid

Shopian,: Five persons were arrested and ₹45,000 in stake money was seized during a police raid at a gambling site in Deegam Nagbal area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district, officials said on Wednesday.

Acting on a credible input, a team from Police Station Shopian conducted a swift raid at the spot, where the accused were found engaged in gambling activities. Despite their attempts to flee, all five individuals were apprehended on the spot.

The arrested have been identified as Adil Rehman Wachkoo, son of Ab Rehman, resident of Hergam Shopian; Suhail Ahmad Bhat, son of Mohammad Ahsan, resident of Keegam; Tariq Ahmad Bhat, son of Ab Gani, resident of Babmohalla Shopian; Sajad Ahmad Ganie, son of Ab Gani, resident of Berthipora; and Sajad Ahmad Wani, son of Ali Mohammad, resident of Mughalpora Keegam.

Police said ₹45,000 in stake money and a set of playing cards were recovered from their possession.

A case under FIR No. 224/2025 has been registered at Police Station Shopian under relevant provisions of the Gambling Act, and further investigation is underway.

“Shopian Police remains committed to curbing social evils and maintaining peace and order in the district,” the official statement added.
