New Delhi: India’s Vishvajit More brought laurels to the nation by winning a bronze medal in the 55 kg Greco-Roman category at the Under-23 Senior World Wrestling Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia.
In a thrilling bronze medal bout, Vishvajit showcased exceptional technique and determination to edge past his Kazakh opponent 5–4, securing India’s first medal at the tournament.
The young wrestler began his campaign with a dominant win over a Romanian opponent in the qualification round, followed by a technical superiority victory against a U.S. wrestler. Despite a hard-fought loss to UWW’s Alibek in the quarterfinals, Vishvajit earned a second chance through the repechage after Alibek advanced to the final.
Making full use of the opportunity, Vishvajit overpowered a Georgian wrestler by technical superiority in the repechage, setting up his bronze medal clash. Displaying grit and composure, he sealed the win and claimed the bronze for India.
This feat stands as a proud moment for Indian wrestling, underscoring the emergence of young talent on the global stage.
A total of 29 Indian wrestlers are participating in the U23 World Wrestling Championships 2025 in Novi Sad, which runs from October 20 to 27. The competition features 10 weight categories each in men’s and women’s freestyle, as well as Greco-Roman wrestling, with India fielding one athlete per category (except men’s freestyle 125 kg). Nearly 700 wrestlers from around the world are vying for glory in the Serbian city.
