Srinagar: The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday declared its support for the ruling National Conference (NC) in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for Friday.

“We have decided to back the NC and vote for their candidates,” PDP president Mehbooba Mufti announced at a press conference.

Explaining the move, Mehbooba said the decision was made to prevent the BJP from gaining ground. “This party (NC) may not deserve it, but we are extending support for the greater cause of keeping fascist forces at bay,” she stated.

She added that the decision followed discussions within the party leadership and its MLAs after the NC sought their backing for the polls.

According to Mehbooba, NC president Farooq Abdullah personally called her to request the PDP’s support.

A day earlier, NC’s Rajya Sabha candidate Shammi Oberoi had met Mehbooba at her Srinagar residence to formally seek the party’s support.
