Srinagar, : Senior National Conference (NC) leader and former minister Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan has been elected to the Rajya Sabha from Jammu and Kashmir, securing 58 votes, officials said on Friday.

Ramzan’s victory is the first declared result in the ongoing Rajya Sabha elections, where 85 MLAs cast their votes earlier in the day. Backed by the NC-led alliance, he won with a clear margin, benefiting from the party’s strong numerical position in the Legislative Assembly.

According to highly placed sources, the NC’s majority in the House ensured Ramzan’s smooth win. Two other NC candidates are also expected to secure victories comfortably, while the BJP is likely to claim one seat.

Following his win, Ramzan thanked party president Dr. Farooq Abdullah, vice president Omar Abdullah, and alliance partners for their support, describing the outcome as “a mandate to uphold J&K’s political dignity and democratic voice.”

Counting for the remaining seats is still in progress, with official results expected soon.
