Judicial Probe Into Leh Clashes To Begin Saturday

Leh/Jammu: The judicial inquiry into the September 24 violence in Leh will commence on Saturday, with aggrieved individuals invited to record their testimonies before the inquiry panel.

On October 17, the Centre fulfilled a major demand of protesting Ladakh groups by ordering a judicial probe, led by a retired Supreme Court judge, into the clashes that claimed four lives — including that of a Kargil war veteran from 1999.

According to an order issued on Friday by Qureshi Tariq Mehmood, Consultant in the Department of Law and Justice, the proceedings will take place at the Alternate Dispute Redressal Centre, Melongthang, Leh, from October 25 to 28.

The order directed that all necessary arrangements for the inquiry be made on a priority basis and urged affected persons to come forward and record their statements before the panel.

The September 24 clashes between security forces and protesters — demanding statehood and inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule — left four civilians dead and around 90 injured, intensifying the region’s months-long agitation.
