Trump to Witness Cambodia–Thailand ‘Great Peace Deal’ Signing Upon Arrival in Malaysia

Washington, : US President Donald Trump announced that he will witness the signing of a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia immediately upon his arrival in Malaysia on Sunday for the ASEAN summit.

Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who had requested to advance the signing following the death of the Kingdom’s Queen Mother, will attend the ceremony “when we land,” Trump said late Saturday in a post on his Truth Social account from aboard Air Force One.

“I am on my way to Malaysia, where I will sign the great Peace Deal, which I proudly brokered between Cambodia and Thailand,” Trump wrote.
“Sadly, the Queen Mother of Thailand has just passed away. I send my condolences to the great people of Thailand. I will be seeing their wonderful Prime Minister when we land. In order to accommodate everyone for this major event, we will be signing the Peace Deal immediately upon arrival. See you soon! — President DJT.”

Prime Minister Anutin postponed his departure to the ASEAN summit following the Queen Mother’s passing but confirmed his intention to travel to Malaysia on Sunday morning for the signing.

“I cancelled my trip to Malaysia today. However, regarding the peace deal between Thailand and Cambodia with the Prime Minister of Malaysia and the US President, I’ve asked them to reschedule for tomorrow morning instead,” Anutin said in comments aired on Thai television.

Thailand’s former Queen Sirikit, mother of current King Vajiralongkorn and wife of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, passed away on October 24 at the age of 93, according to an announcement from the royal palace.

Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan confirmed last week that Trump would attend the ceremonial signing of the Cambodia–Thailand peace deal during the ASEAN summit.

Tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbors flared in July, leading to the deadliest border clashes in decades, which killed more than 40 people and displaced around 300,000 civilians. A ceasefire, brokered in part by Trump, was reached after five days of fighting, though both sides have since exchanged accusations of violating the truce.

On October 23, Thailand and Cambodia reaffirmed their commitment to advancing border demarcation efforts following a two-day meeting of the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) in Chanthaburi, Thailand. The meeting, held from October 21–22, produced several key agreements aimed at expediting the land boundary resolution process, according to local media reports.

The Thai Royal Family holds deep reverence in the country, viewed by many as semi-divine figures, with their images prominently displayed in public spaces and homes across the nation.
