UAE: Indian Embassy Launches Chip-Enabled E-Passport System for Expats

Abu Dhabi: — The Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi has introduced an upgraded passport issuance system that will provide chip-enabled e-passports to all Indian nationals residing in the UAE starting October 28, 2025. The initiative, known as the Global Passport Seva Programme (GPSP) 2.0, marks a significant technological leap in the delivery of passport services to the Indian diaspora.

From October 28 onward, all passport-related applications must be submitted exclusively through the new online portal at mportal.passportindia.gov.in/gpsp/AuthNavigation/Login. The transition to this system is mandatory for all Indian expatriates in the UAE seeking new passports, renewals, or related services.

At the heart of this upgrade is the rollout of e-passports equipped with embedded microchips that store digital information about the passport holder. These next-generation passports are designed to facilitate faster and more secure processing at immigration checkpoints worldwide, aligning India’s travel documents with global biometric standards.

The GPSP 2.0 portal introduces multiple user-friendly features to simplify the application process. Applicants can now upload ICAO-compliant photographs, signatures, and supporting documents directly through the portal prior to their appointment. Embassy officials have encouraged users to take advantage of this pre-upload feature to significantly reduce waiting times at passport service centers. Comprehensive photo preparation guidelines are available on the Embassy’s website.

In another major improvement, the new platform allows BLS service providers to make minor corrections to submitted applications—an option not available in the previous system. This change eliminates the need for complete resubmission in case of small errors, saving applicants time and effort. The correction feature is offered free of charge.

The launch of GPSP 2.0 will benefit the entire Indian expatriate community in the UAE, ensuring more efficient, transparent, and technologically advanced passport services.
