Srinagar,: Senior BJP leader and Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma on Wednesday accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by announcing the opening of National Law University (NLU) classes in Budgam, where the by-election process is currently underway.
Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly in Srinagar, Sharma said the Chief Minister’s announcement on the floor of the House regarding the commencement of NLU classes at Ompura, Budgam, amounted to a clear violation of election norms.
“On the floor of the House, Omar Abdullah Sahib assured that classes for the National Law University would begin in Budgam, which goes against the Model Code of Conduct,” Sharma said. “For this violation, he should resign on moral grounds.”
The BJP leader further said that his party would approach the Election Commission of India (ECI) to seek action against the Chief Minister. “If the Chief Minister does not resign, the BJP will file a formal complaint with the Election Commission and demand strict action,” he added.
Questioning the Chief Minister’s authority to make policy announcements during the MCC, Sharma said, “What right does he have to take such decisions when the Model Code of Conduct is in force? The Chief Minister cannot disregard the directives of the Election Commission of India.”
He also alleged that Omar Abdullah had previously made statements undermining institutions and had now crossed another line by making policy decisions during the MCC period. “If he truly believes in morality, he should step down. Otherwise, we will request the Election Commission to intervene,” Sharma said.
