Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir recorded over 2,800 domestic violence cases in the past two years, witnessing a sharp 121 per cent surge in reported incidents during the last financial year, the Legislative Assembly was informed on Thursday.
Responding to a query from National Conference (NC) MLA Shamim Firdous, Minister for Social Welfare Sakina Itoo said a total of 2,872 domestic violence cases were registered over the last two years at the One Stop Centres for Women and on the Mission Shakti dashboard across J&K.
Of these, 893 cases were reported in 2023–24, while 1,979 cases were registered in 2024–25, marking an increase of 1,086 cases — or 121.61 per cent — compared to the previous year, the minister informed.
The government said One Stop Centres for Women, commonly known as Sakhi Centres, operate under the Directorate of Mission Shakti. Established in 2018, these centres provide comprehensive support to women in distress, including medical assistance, psychosocial counselling, legal aid, temporary shelter, and police coordination.
The centres are linked with the toll-free 181 Women Helpline Service and the 112 Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) to ensure seamless response and assistance, the minister added.
She further stated that these centres are mandated to ensure safety and support for women affected by domestic violence, cyber harassment, eve-teasing, sexual harassment, rape, and other forms of abuse.
