JAMMU: Security forces on Thursday carried out a route march and briefing exercise in the Nagrota Assembly constituency ahead of the November 11 by-election to instill public confidence and familiarise deployed personnel with the area.

Superintendent of Police (Rural) Jammu, Brijesh Sharma, said the march was part of routine security protocols aimed at ensuring peace and order during the polling process.

“Personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and local police, along with election observers, took part in the march across various areas of Nagrota. The objective is to acquaint the forces with the terrain and reinforce public confidence,” Sharma told reporters.

He added that the exercise also aimed to strengthen coordination among security agencies and enhance preparedness to handle any situation that may arise during polling.

The by-election in Nagrota was necessitated following the death of BJP legislator Devender Singh Rana on October 31 last year.

The constituency is witnessing a triangular contest among BJP’s Devyani Devyani, National Conference candidate Shamim Begum, and Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party president Harsh Dev Singh.

A total of ten candidates, including one from the Aam Aadmi Party, are in the fray.

Since 1996, the BJP has won the Nagrota seat thrice—in 2002, 2008, and 2024—while the National Conference emerged victorious in 1996 and 2014.
