MHA appoints Special Public Prosecutor for Pahalgam terror attack trial
New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has appointed advocate Shri Singh as the Special Public Prosecutor to conduct the trial of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack case.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is likely to file its chargesheet in the case shortly. The attack, carried out by the Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed 26 lives—mostly tourists—at Baisaran valley near Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to an MHA notification, Shri Singh has been appointed as Special Public Prosecutor for NIA case No. RC-02/2025/NIA/JMU for a period of three years, or until the completion of the trial, whichever is earlier. He will represent the NIA before the special NIA court in Jammu as well as the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
A Jammu court had on September 18 granted the NIA a 45-day extension to complete its probe into the incident. With the deadline ending this week, the agency is expected to submit its chargesheet soon.
Home Minister Amit Shah informed Parliament on July 29 that the perpetrators of the attack were Pakistani nationals affiliated with LeT.
During the investigation, the NIA has questioned over 1,000 individuals, including tourists, pony and mule operators, photographers, local workers, and shopkeepers.
In the aftermath of the attack, Indian armed forces launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror camps and military installations across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in precision pre-dawn strikes.
