Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather on Friday assured that “appropriate action” will be taken against a journalist who uploaded a video on social media claiming that a National Conference (NC) MLA was “watching reels” on his phone during the House proceedings.
The issue was raised by Karnah MLA Javaid Mirchal as soon as the Assembly convened on Friday morning.
Mirchal said a journalist had recorded him during Thursday’s session while he was scrolling through his phone and later shared the clip on social media, alleging that he was wasting time.
“I was just scrolling through my mobile during the proceedings yesterday. The journalist shot the video and uploaded it on social media, claiming I was watching reels,” Mirchal said.
The video has since gone viral, attracting nearly 63,000 views on the portal’s Facebook page, which has around one million followers.
Mirchal added that the incident caused him distress as people from his constituency had been calling him continuously, leaving him unable to sleep the entire night.
Supporting Mirchal, NC MLA from Gurez, Nazir Ahmad Khan Gurezi, said they were considering moving a privilege motion against the journalist.
In response, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather said, “I assure the House that appropriate action will be taken against the defaulter.”
