YouTube to Roll Out AI-Powered Video Upscaling for Better Viewing Quality
YouTube is set to enhance video quality for mobile users with a new AI-powered upscaling feature rolling out in the coming weeks. While original video quality will still be available, the higher-quality AI-enhanced version is expected to attract more viewers to use the automatic feature.
The company’s new system, called “Super Resolution,” uses artificial intelligence to detect and upscale low-quality videos—particularly those below 1080p resolution—to higher quality levels, potentially reaching up to 4K resolution. Initially, the focus will be on improving standard-definition (SD) videos to high-definition (HD).
YouTube emphasizes that this upscaling process will happen automatically but still gives users and creators the option to opt out. Creators will retain access to their original uploads and can continue offering videos in their native quality if they prefer. For viewers, AI-enhanced videos will be marked with a “Super Resolution” label, while the original version will remain available for playback.
In a related move, YouTube is also expanding its Shorts ecosystem through a new partnership with Adobe. The collaboration will allow creators to edit short-form videos using Adobe Premiere Pro, including its iOS app, making it easier to trim and edit clips directly from an iPhone.
This integration aims to simplify the editing process for creators who primarily use iPhones for shooting content, further strengthening YouTube’s position against short-form rivals like Instagram Reels and TikTok.
