Kathmandu: Over a dozen trekkers, including three Austrian nationals and several Nepali guides, have been out of contact since Friday morning in Nepal’s remote Mustang district amid heavy snowfall, according to the company that organised their expedition.

Nepal’s mountainous and high-hill regions have been witnessing continuous snowfall for several days, while lower areas have seen heavy rainfall. In response, local authorities in multiple districts have restricted trekking activities in remote areas due to safety concerns.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology attributed the deteriorating weather to the influence of Cyclone Montha, which developed over the Bay of Bengal, warning that it poses risks to both residents and trekkers.

Himalayan Adventure Sports Private Limited, the organiser of the trek, said a team of 13 members — including nine Nepalis and three Austrians — has gone contactless in Mustang.

“One of my guides managed to contact me briefly around 11:30 a.m. today, but the line was abruptly cut off, and we haven’t heard from them since,” said Dorje Tamang, Director of the company, speaking to IANS on Friday evening. “Before that, my last conversation with them was on October 24.”

According to Tamang, the group was returning from the Damodar Kunda area — located at an altitude of 4,890 metres — when last heard from. “Their initial plan was to reach Phu Gaun in the neighbouring Manang district via the Saribung Pass. However, the guide had informed me they turned back due to worsening weather. Since we had brief contact on Friday morning, I believe they are safe,” he added.

Mustang’s Chief District Officer, Bishnu Prasad Bhusal, confirmed that authorities are trying to re-establish communication with the missing group. “The Damodar Kunda region is facing heavy snowfall, and communication is extremely difficult. However, given the severity of the weather, we are especially concerned for the trekkers’ safety,” Bhusal said.

He further noted that helicopter rescue operations would be launched on Saturday if weather conditions improve.
