Jammu: Tenant, Employee Verification Made Mandatory by November 6
Authorities in Jammu have made it mandatory for all landlords, property owners, and business establishments to submit details of their tenants, domestic helpers, and employees to the local police within seven days, officials said on Saturday.
District Magistrate Rakesh Minhas issued the directive on Friday under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), following a report from the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Jammu, emphasizing the need for such verification.
The order comes just ahead of the reopening of the move offices in Jammu on November 3, after their closure in Srinagar on October 31, as part of the traditional Darbar Move practice.
As per the order, property owners, contractors, and heads of commercial establishments are required to furnish details of their tenants and workers through a declaration form signed by both parties, to be submitted either in person or via registered post to the local Station House Officer (SHO).
Those who have already rented out premises or employed workers before the order’s issuance must provide the information by November 6, while future arrangements must be reported to the concerned police station within seven days.
Every police station in Jammu district has been directed to maintain a separate register for tenant and employee verification. The order also extends to all cases of hiring workers, paying guests, or letting/sub-letting properties.
Any violation will invite legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the order stated.
The Darbar Move system — under which government offices operate from Srinagar during summer and from Jammu in winter — was reinstated by the Omar Abdullah government on October 16, after being scrapped by the lieutenant governor’s administration in 2021.
