New Delhi: Indian men’s team head coach Gautam Gambhir and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav extended heartfelt congratulations to the Indian women’s cricket team after they clinched their maiden ICC World Cup title on Sunday night at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
India defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final, ending a long wait for their first-ever ICC trophy. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur made history by becoming the first Indian women’s captain to lead the team to victory in an ICC tournament final.
Taking to X, Gambhir and Suryakumar hailed the women’s side for their remarkable achievement.
“You haven’t just created history — you’ve created a legacy that will inspire generations of girls! #LegendsForever,” wrote Gambhir.
Suryakumar added, “What a historic moment for Indian cricket. Our Women in Blue have shown the world what passion, perseverance, and belief can achieve. Congratulations!”
As the clock struck midnight, Indian women’s cricket entered a new era — a moment born out of years of resilience and struggle. The packed stands at DY Patil Stadium erupted in celebration as Harmanpreet Kaur’s team achieved the ultimate glory, realizing a dream that had eluded generations.
After the heartbreak of the 2017 World Cup final loss to England — where Harmanpreet and Smriti Mandhana came agonizingly close — redemption finally arrived.
In a touching gesture, Kaur and her deputy honoured legends Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami, who had devoted their careers to Indian cricket but never lifted the trophy, by handing them the World Cup during the celebrations. Tears of joy flowed freely as the moment marked not just a victory, but the culmination of a decades-long dream.
