Srinagar: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch Kashmir (CBK) on Tuesday announced the conviction of Mohammad Shafi Banday, former Managing Director of the J&K Cooperative Central Land Development Bank, for fraudulently altering his date of birth to unlawfully extend his service tenure.

According to officials, the case began after a complaint alleged that Banday had deliberately recorded his date of birth as September 1, 1939, instead of his actual year of birth, 1934, using a forged certificate. During investigation, the Crime Branch verified the manipulation and determined that his true date of birth was June 26, 1932. A formal case was subsequently registered.

The investigation confirmed that Banday had overstayed in service by over seven years, resulting in wrongful financial gain to himself and loss to the state exchequer. A chargesheet was filed before the competent court for trial.

After a full hearing, the City Judge, Srinagar, found the accused guilty under Sections 420, 468, and 471 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC). He was sentenced to two years of simple imprisonment on each count and fined ₹5,000 per offence, with all sentences to run concurrently.

The EOW said the conviction reflects its firm commitment to ensuring transparency, accountability, and integrity in public service.
