New Delhi: The Congress on Thursday said that “rising unemployment” has become a matter of “serious concern”, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of remaining in “permanent election mode” instead of addressing the issue.

Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh said that the “11 years of BJP’s misrule” have adversely affected all sections of society.

“Students, youth, farmers, labourers, shopkeepers, employees, and businessmen — no section is satisfied with this government. Inflation is soaring, the rupee is weakening, and the wealth gap is widening, making life increasingly difficult for poor and middle-class families,” Ramesh wrote in a post on X.

He cited the latest CMIE data showing that India’s unemployment rate rose to 7.5% in October 2025, the highest in the past six months.

“Millions have lost their jobs across sectors like construction, IT, and banking. Over 90 lakh jobs have vanished in the construction industry alone, while salaried jobs have fallen by 25 lakh,” Ramesh said, adding that such alarming trends have persisted year after year.

“Despite this, Modi ji seems unconcerned about the plight of India’s youth. He remains in election mode, crafting new speeches to distract the public rather than finding real solutions to unemployment,” he added.

The Congress has repeatedly criticized the government’s handling of the economy, citing rising prices, sluggish private investment, and stagnant wages as factors burdening ordinary citizens.
