Jammu: Hundreds of daily wagers on Thursday marched towards Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s residence here, demanding regularisation of their services, release of pending wages, and implementation of minimum wage norms. Police intercepted the protesters midway and detained their leader.
The demonstration was organised by the All Daily Wagers Jammu Kashmir Sangarsh Samiti—an umbrella body representing daily wagers, daily-rated employees, and ASHA workers—pressing for the fulfilment of their long-pending demands.
Led by the Samiti’s chairman, Sunny Kant Chib, scores of workers from various departments, including several women, took out a protest rally against the Omar Abdullah-led government for its “failure” to address their grievances.
Chanting slogans against the government, the protesters moved towards the CM’s residence on Residency Road but were stopped by a heavy police contingent at Shaheedi Chowk. Following Chib’s detention, women workers staged a sit-in at the spot, demanding a meeting with the chief minister.
“We have been seeking regularisation of hundreds of daily wagers, release of pending wages, and implementation of minimum wages, but the government has turned a blind eye,” Chib told reporters before being detained. He added that daily wagers and casual workers had been facing injustice for years and urged the CM to intervene to resolve their issues.
