Trump hints at India visit next year, praises Modi and claims tariffs stopped India-Pakistan conflict

New York,: US President Donald Trump has said he may travel to India next year, noting that his talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ongoing trade discussions are “going good.”

“It’s great, going good. He (Prime Minister Modi) largely stopped buying oil from Russia,” Trump told reporters at the Oval Office when asked about the progress of talks with India.

Calling Modi a “friend” and a “great man,” Trump added, “He wants me to go there. We’ll figure that out. I had a great trip there with Prime Minister Modi… and I’ll be going.” When asked specifically if the visit could take place next year, Trump responded, “It could be, yeah.”

India is set to host the next Quad summit in New Delhi, with leaders from Australia, Japan, and the United States attending. The 2024 summit was held in Wilmington, Delaware, though dates for the upcoming meeting are yet to be finalized.

Reiterating a previous claim, Trump said his use of trade tariffs helped prevent a war between India and Pakistan in May.

“Of the eight wars I ended, five or six were because of tariffs,” he said. “India and Pakistan — two nuclear nations — were fighting, shooting at each other. Eight planes were shot down. I told them, ‘If you guys are going to fight, I’ll put tariffs on you.’ They weren’t happy, but within 24 hours, I settled the war.”

Trump described tariffs as a “great national defence,” crediting them for maintaining peace and stability in several global conflicts.
