ChatGPT Go’s 1-year free trial for Indian users comes with a catch — here’s what you need to know

OpenAI on Tuesday announced that it is offering ChatGPT Go — the premium tier of its flagship AI chatbot positioned just below the Pro plan — free for one year to users in India.

According to OpenAI, the limited-time promotional offer begins Tuesday (November 4) and was introduced to celebrate the OpenAI DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru. The company stated that the offer is now available to redeem via the ChatGPT web app and the Google Play Store, while it will be available on the Apple App Store next week.

However, there’s one key condition: the offer is technically a free trial, not a completely free subscription.

If the plan were entirely free, users could activate ChatGPT Go without adding any payment details. But since this is a 12-month promotional trial, users must enter a payment method (credit/debit card or UPI). This ensures that after the trial ends, the regular subscription fee of ₹399/month can be charged unless the user cancels.

To avoid being charged after the free year, users can disable auto-renewal or cancel their subscription before the trial period ends.

OpenAI also noted that existing ChatGPT Go subscribers will automatically receive the free promotional period from their next billing cycle, provided there are no pending payments on their account.

How to claim the 12-month ChatGPT Go free trial

On ChatGPT Web

1. Sign up or log in to your ChatGPT account.
2. Click “Try ChatGPT Go” or navigate to Settings → Account → “Try ChatGPT Go.”
3. Add a payment method during checkout — no charges will apply for one year.
4. Once checkout is complete, the promotional plan activates and auto-renews monthly for 12 months.
5. Terms and conditions can be reviewed anytime under Settings → Account.

For Android Users

1. Download or update to the latest ChatGPT app from Google Play.
2. Tap “Upgrade to Go for Free” or “Try Go” from the home screen, or access it via Settings → “Upgrade to Go for Free.”
3. Add a payment method and complete checkout to start the 12-month free trial, which renews automatically each month.

For iOS Users

The free trial will be available on the Apple App Store next week.
If you want to access it sooner, OpenAI recommends redeeming the offer via the ChatGPT web app and then logging into your account on the iOS app to start using ChatGPT Go.
