Srinagar: Police on Friday recovered an AK-47 rifle from the locker of a former senior resident doctor at Government Medical College (GMC) in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
According to officials, the weapon was found during a joint operation by Srinagar Police and the Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC) Anantnag. The former doctor, identified as Dr. Adeel Ahmad Rather, son of Abdul Majeed Rather and a resident of Qazigund, Anantnag, has been detained for questioning.
Dr. Rather had served as a senior resident at GMC Anantnag until October 24, 2024. Police said the AK-47 rifle was recovered from his personal locker within the college premises.
Both the recovered rifle and the detained individual are currently in Srinagar Police’s custody. A case has been registered under sections 7/25 of the Arms Act and sections 13, 28, 38, and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act).
Officials said the investigation is being jointly handled by Srinagar Police and JIC Anantnag to determine how the weapon ended up in the doctor’s possession and whether any broader connections exist.
Authorities confirmed that all legal formalities are being followed, and the probe is ongoing. No details have yet been shared about the source of the rifle or possible links to militant networks.
A police spokesperson stated, “Adeel and the AK-47 are with Srinagar Police.” Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
