Jammu: A police officer was transferred after a video allegedly showing him slapping a Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Service (JKAS) officer in Jammu went viral on social media on Monday, triggering widespread outrage among the public and political leaders.

According to officials, the incident took place in the Gandhi Nagar area when Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Sunil Singh allegedly slapped Block Development Officer (BDO) Azhar Khan during a heated argument over election-related arrangements.

Khan, who was serving as transport in-charge for the ongoing by-election in the Nagrota Assembly segment, was reportedly carrying out his official duties when the confrontation occurred.

The JKAS fraternity strongly condemned the incident, terming it an assault on the dignity and authority of the civil administration. The association alleged that Khan was assaulted while on duty and was later booked under a false case, warning of a mass casual leave protest in a letter addressed to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday night.

Taking cognizance of the matter, the police department transferred SDPO Sunil Singh to the Police Headquarters and appointed Deputy Superintendent of Police Kuljit Singh as his replacement.
