Jammu: Police on Tuesday said that a notorious criminal, recently released after detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA), lost a hand in an attack allegedly carried out by members of a rival group.

The injured man, identified as Kulbir Bhagat alias Rinku (27), a resident of Langotian village, was assaulted with sharp-edged weapons by unidentified assailants in the Miran Sahib area on the outskirts of Jammu during the intervening night of November 10 and 11, officials said.

Rinku sustained grievous injuries, including the severing of one hand, and was immediately shifted to Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital, Jammu, for treatment, a police spokesperson said.

A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team collected evidence from the scene, and preliminary investigation suggests the attack was the result of a rivalry between two criminal groups, police said.

Rinku, described as a hardcore criminal, had been detained under the Public Safety Act in 2024 and was released from jail only a few months ago. He was also wanted in multiple assault cases registered at the R S Pura and Arnia police stations, the spokesperson added.

Police have registered a case under relevant legal sections, and a hunt has been launched to identify and arrest the attackers.
