Leh/Jammu: The Ladakh administration is planning to electrify border posts in the Daulat Beg Oldie (DBO) sector through grid connectivity, officials said on Wednesday.

Located along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, DBO hosts several Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) outposts, as well as the world’s highest airstrip.

According to officials, the Ladakh Power Development Department (LPDD) has submitted proposals to extend grid power to these strategic border locations.

The plan was discussed during a high-level meeting chaired by Prince Dhawan, Executive Director of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme, to review power sector initiatives in the Union Territory.

Dhawan lauded the initiative, highlighting its strategic value in ensuring reliable and sustainable electricity for remote border areas. He directed officials to fast-track approvals and coordinate with relevant agencies for early execution.

The meeting also reviewed progress on the Border Area Package for Nubra and Changthang, being implemented by the turnkey contractor GEPDEC. Dhawan assessed the status of the upstream network, the upcoming 220 kV transmission system in Nubra, and ongoing smart metering projects across Ladakh.

He further examined the implementation of the Unified Billing System (UBS) and smart meters for remaining consumers under the Special Development Package (SDP). LPDD has proposed installing smart meters for 18,279 consumers yet to be covered under the scheme, pending necessary approvals.
