New Delhi: DNA analysis of samples collected from the Red Fort blast site has confirmed that Dr. Umar Nabi was driving the car that exploded earlier this week, police sources said on Thursday.

Investigators had collected DNA samples from Umar’s mother on Tuesday and examined them alongside human remains recovered from the scene. “The results confirm that Umar was driving the vehicle at the time of the explosion,” a source said.

Umar, a resident of Koil village in Pulwama, was identified as a key member of a “white-collar” terror module that was busted earlier this week. Hours after police arrested eight people — including three doctors — for their alleged links with proscribed outfits Jaish-e-Mohammed and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, a high-intensity blast tore through a slow-moving car near Delhi’s Red Fort on Monday evening.

Police later seized nearly 3,000 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, potassium chlorate and sulphur during operations spread across Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
