Chandigarh/Ahmedabad: Smartphone sales across India saw a sharp rise this Diwali, with retailers attributing the surge to improved consumer sentiment, increased purchasing power due to lower GST on various goods, and multiple new launches.
Retailers said this year’s festive season delivered stronger-than-expected performance, especially in the mid-range and premium categories.
Chandigarh-based mobile retailer Anil Dhingra said that although the GST rate on mobile phones remains unchanged, reduced taxes on other items have boosted overall spending capacity.
“Sales exceeded expectations this Diwali. The iPhone 17 series created significant buzz, driving a 40% jump in iPhone sales. Smartphones in the ₹25,000–₹40,000 segment also performed very well,” Dhingra told IANS.
Another retailer, Amandeep Singh, said lower GST and attractive company offers encouraged buyers to upgrade.
“Android phones priced between ₹9,000 and ₹36,000 saw strong demand. iPhone sales were also robust because of the new launch, and I believe over five million units have been sold across India this season,” he said.
In Ahmedabad, retailer Yashwant also reported strong traction for Android devices.
“Phones above ₹15,000 sold well this Diwali. While iPhone demand rose compared to last year, Android remains the preferred choice for budget-conscious customers,” he said.
With festive deals, easy financing and upbeat consumer sentiment, retailers expect strong sales momentum to continue through the year-end.
India’s smartphone market reached a five-year high in the festive third quarter of 2025, growing 4.3% year-on-year to 48 million units, according to IDC data released this week. Apple achieved its highest-ever quarterly shipments in India—5 million units—in Q3 2025, securing the fourth spot in the market for the first time.
