Srinagar: Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on Thursday met Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq at the latter’s residence in Srinagar.
In a statement, Mirwaiz said the meeting was cordial and centred on the need for peace, compassion and interfaith harmony in contemporary times.
Sri Sri, on his first visit to Kashmir in seven years, expressed delight at returning to the Valley and praised its spiritual and cultural heritage as an enduring symbol of coexistence.
Reaffirming his stand, Kashmir’s chief cleric said the Mirwaiz institution remains committed to peace and dialogue as the most humane and effective path to address issues and resolve differences.
Both leaders agreed that injustice and disempowerment fuel radicalisation, posing a threat to peace. Mirwaiz also appreciated Sri Sri’s recent anti-drug initiatives in the Valley.
Referring to Sri Sri’s scheduled visit to Srinagar Central Jail, Mirwaiz stressed the need for a compassionate approach in efforts to secure the release of political prisoners and detained youth, urging the spiritual leader to play a constructive role.
The two leaders concluded that sustained dialogue and mutual understanding are vital for promoting peace and human dignity.
