Moscow: A Russian Su-30 fighter jet on a routine training mission crashed in the Karelia region near the Finland border on Thursday evening, killing both crew members, the Russian Defence Ministry said.
According to the ministry, the aircraft went down in an uninhabited area. “Today, at around 7:00 pm Moscow time, a Su-30 fighter jet crashed in Karelia during a scheduled training flight. The aircraft crashed in an uninhabited area. The flight was conducted without ammunition. The crew was killed,” the statement released by TASS said.
Karelia’s regional authorities dispatched emergency services to the suspected crash site, Governor Artur Parfenchikov said.
“I have received information about the crash of a military jet in the Prionezhsky district. I have sent Karelia’s emergency services to the presumed crash site,” he wrote on Telegram.
Later, the governor confirmed there were no casualties or damage on the ground, as the jet crashed in a dense forested area.
