New York [US]: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York on Thursday, where the two discussed the global geopolitical landscape, regional flashpoints, and the importance of strengthening multilateralism.
In a post on X, Jaishankar said he appreciated Guterres’ insights on current global developments and thanked him for his “clear and consistent support” for India’s growth. “Valued his assessment of the current global order and its implications for multilateralism. Also appreciated his perspectives on various regional hotspots. Look forward to welcoming him in India,” he wrote.
The meeting came on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, where India is participating as an invited partner under Canada’s presidency.
Earlier, Jaishankar joined the G7 Outreach Session on energy security and critical minerals. He stressed India’s willingness to work constructively with global partners and highlighted the need to reduce overdependence, strengthen predictability, and build resilient supply chains. While noting that policy consultations are useful, he emphasised the importance of translating them into action on the ground.
In another post on X, he shared, “Spoke about the need to mitigate dependence, strengthen predictability and build resilience… Greater international cooperation is the only way forward.”
Jaishankar also participated in the G7 Outreach Session on Maritime Security and Prosperity, where he outlined India’s MAHASAGAR outlook, its Indo-Pacific partnerships, and its evolving role as a first responder in the maritime domain. He called for trusted and diversified maritime links, enhanced protection of critical maritime and undersea infrastructure, and deeper cooperation against piracy, smuggling, and IUU fishing.
He underscored India’s efforts to upgrade shipping infrastructure, develop resilient trade corridors, and strengthen HADR collaboration across the Indo-Pacific, while reiterating the need to uphold UNCLOS.
India is attending the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting as an invited partner alongside Brazil, Australia, and South Korea. The discussions highlight India’s proactive role in global diplomacy and its engagement on issues of trade, security, and sustainable development.
The Ministry of External Affairs said earlier this week that Jaishankar’s participation reaffirms India’s commitment to working with international partners and amplifying the voice of the Global South in global forums.
