Srinagar/Jammu: Several political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday expressed deep sorrow over the accidental explosion at Nowgam police station, which claimed nine lives and left 32 others injured.
In a post on his official X handle, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he was deeply pained by the tragedy. “The chief minister has expressed profound grief over the accidental explosion at Nowgam police station, which resulted in the loss of precious lives and injuries to several personnel,” the statement read. He also conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
Former chief minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said she was deeply anguished by the incident. “This heartbreaking incident highlights the risks and difficult conditions under which our police personnel serve to keep the rest of us safe. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, and prayers for strength and swift recovery for the injured,” she posted on X.
People’s Conference president Sajad Lone also termed the incident heartbreaking. “The accidental blast at Nowgam police station is heartbreaking. Heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. May they find the strength to bear this loss,” he said.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha is likely to visit Srinagar on Saturday afternoon to assess the situation. He cancelled a scheduled security review meeting in Jammu earlier in the day due to the incident, official sources said.
The explosion occurred while officials were extracting samples from a large cache of explosives seized in the “white-collar terror module” case.
