Kathmandu, Nov 22: Experts have warned that 42 glacial lakes in Nepal are at high risk of bursting, posing serious threats to downstream communities. The lakes, located at high altitudes in the Himalayas, have been identified as vulnerable due to melting glaciers and unstable natural dams.
Scientists have highlighted that rising temperatures and climate change are accelerating glacial melting, increasing the likelihood of sudden outburst floods. Such events can cause catastrophic damage to villages, infrastructure, and agriculture in the affected regions.
Authorities and disaster management agencies have been urged to monitor these high-risk lakes closely, implement early warning systems, and develop emergency preparedness plans to minimize potential loss of life and property.
Experts emphasize the need for both long-term climate adaptation strategies and immediate mitigation measures to address the increasing risks posed by glacial lake outbursts in Nepal.
