Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined the IBSA Leaders’ Meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, held on the sidelines of the G20 Summit. The meeting brought together President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil and President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the need for urgent reforms in global governance systems and highlighted IBSA’s role as a platform connecting three continents, three major democracies, and three major economies. He noted that the grouping has consistently advanced initiatives focused on human-centric development, multilateral reform, and sustainable growth.
Prime Minister Modi also proposed the creation of an IBSA Digital Innovation Alliance to facilitate the sharing of digital public infrastructure, including India’s UPI payment system and health platforms such as CoWIN. The initiative aims to strengthen South-South cooperation and enhance collaboration among developing nations.
The meeting coincided with the first-ever G20 Summit hosted on African soil, underscoring the growing role of the Global South in shaping international discourse and advancing inclusive development.
