New Delhi, Nov 28: The Congress party has asked whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take up South Africa’s cause with his “good friend” U.S. President Donald Trump, following Washington’s announcement that Pretoria will not be invited to the next G20 Summit in Miami.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said South Africa has been part of the G20 since its inception and remains the largest economy in Africa. He noted that India and South Africa share close ties through BRICS, IBSA, and BASIC groupings, and urged Modi to advocate for South Africa’s rightful participation.

Ramesh described Modi as a self-proclaimed champion of Africa and the Global South, questioning whether he would now act to defend South Africa’s position. The Congress party criticized the government’s silence on the issue, calling for clarity on India’s diplomatic stance.

The development comes after President Trump announced that South Africa would be excluded from the 2026 G20 Summit, citing concerns over its treatment of a U.S. representative at this year’s meeting. The decision has drawn international attention, with observers warning of implications for global representation and fairness.
