Bandipora, November 30, 2025: A massive forest fire has been raging for the fourth consecutive day in the Bagtore area near the Line of Control (LoC) in Gurez valley, Bandipora district, destroying large stretches of forest land and damaging trees despite sustained firefighting efforts.
The blaze, which broke out in Forest Compartment 32 of Bagtore, spread rapidly due to dry grass and dense undergrowth. The difficult terrain and windy conditions made containment operations challenging.
Joint teams from the Forest Department, Wildlife Department, Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and local volunteers have been engaged in round-the-clock firefighting operations. Forest Officer Javid Iqbal confirmed that the fire has been largely contained, though hotspots remain and efforts continue to prevent flare-ups.
Officials said the fire originated in a remote hilly location, complicating access for firefighting teams. The incident has caused significant ecological damage, with large tracts of forest land affected.
The ongoing operation underscores the need for enhanced fire management strategies, including early detection systems and community awareness programs, particularly in vulnerable regions near the LoC.
