New Delhi, Dec 02: The Government of India has directed mobile handset manufacturers to ensure the pre-installation of the Sanchar Saathi App in all new devices, aiming to strengthen consumer protection and curb mobile-related fraud. The directive was issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) under the Ministry of Communications.
Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the move is part of the government’s broader digital safety initiative. “Sanchar Saathi empowers citizens to block stolen phones, verify mobile connections, and report misuse. Pre-installation will make these features accessible to every user from day one,” he stated.
Telecom Secretary Neeraj Mittal emphasized that the app will help reduce identity theft and unauthorized SIM usage. “By integrating Sanchar Saathi into handsets, we are creating a safer digital ecosystem for millions of mobile users,” he noted.
The directive has been communicated to leading handset makers including Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Apple, with instructions to comply in upcoming production cycles. Industry representatives have welcomed the move, acknowledging its role in enhancing consumer trust.
Officials confirmed that the app will be available in multiple languages and will not interfere with device performance. Users will be able to access features such as CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register) to block lost or stolen phones, and TAFCOP (Telecom Analytics for Fraud Management and Consumer Protection) to check the number of mobile connections linked to their identity.
Minister of State for Communications Devusinh Chauhan added that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to digital inclusion and safety. “We want every citizen to feel secure while using mobile services. Sanchar Saathi is a step in that direction,” he said.
The directive is expected to come into effect in early 2026, with compliance monitored by the DoT. Officials said the measure will significantly strengthen India’s fight against cyber fraud and mobile-related crimes.
