Srinagar, Dec 5: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday paid floral tributes to former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah on his birth anniversary, describing him as a towering figure who shaped the political and social identity of the region.

Popularly known as Sher-e-Kashmir, Sheikh Abdullah was remembered for his role as a fearless mass leader and a champion of the rights and dignity of the people. The Chief Minister said that Abdullah’s vision of communal harmony and empowerment continues to inspire generations in Jammu and Kashmir.

Party leaders and workers of the National Conference also gathered at his mausoleum at Naseem Bagh, Hazratbal, to offer prayers and reaffirm their commitment to uphold his ideals. They recalled his relentless struggle for justice and his contribution to the democratic aspirations of the people of the Valley.

Officials noted that Sheikh Abdullah’s birth anniversary, marking 120 years since his birth in 1905, remains a significant occasion for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, even though the day is no longer observed as a public holiday. The Chief Minister said that his legacy “resides in the hearts of the people” regardless of official recognition.
