Srinagar, Dec 05: In a significant boost to healthcare and medical education, the Government of India has approved the establishment of a new medical college in Jammu and Kashmir. Alongside this, the Union Territory has been allotted 379 MBBS seats and 118 postgraduate seats for the upcoming academic session 2025–26, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The announcement was made after the National Medical Commission (NMC) finalized allocations under its expansion plan. Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patel, informed the Rajya Sabha that J&K is among the three states and Union Territories selected for new medical colleges in the next academic cycle. She highlighted that the Centre has sanctioned 118 new medical colleges nationwide, with 44 scheduled to begin operations in 2025–26, adding 11,732 undergraduate medical seats across India.
Officials said the new medical college in J&K will strengthen the region’s healthcare infrastructure and provide greater opportunities for aspiring medical students. The sanctioned 379 MBBS seats will significantly enhance intake capacity, while the 118 PG seats will help address the shortage of specialist doctors in the Union Territory.
Health authorities in Srinagar welcomed the decision, noting that the expansion will not only improve access to medical education but also contribute to better healthcare delivery across districts. The move is expected to reduce patient load on existing institutions and create new avenues for research and training in the region.
With this development, Jammu and Kashmir joins states like Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, which have also received approvals for multiple new medical colleges. The Centre reiterated its commitment to strengthening medical education and healthcare services nationwide, ensuring equitable distribution of resources across regions.
