Guwahati, Dec 5: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday confirmed that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of singer Zubeen Garg will file its charge sheet between December 6 and December 12. He said the submission will be made ahead of the December 18 deadline set by the court to prevent the accused from seeking bail.
Sarma told reporters that the SIT, led by Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta, has compiled nearly 3,500 pages of evidence and statements. Investigating Officer Rosie Kalita has coordinated the probe, which examined multiple FIRs lodged across Assam following Garg’s death in Singapore on September 19.
The Chief Minister added that he has held discussions with Advocate General Devajit Saikia to ensure the case proceeds swiftly. He said the state will request the Gauhati High Court to designate a fast-track court for trial, underscoring the government’s commitment to delivering justice in the case.
Event organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta and Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma have already been arrested in connection with the case. The SIT has been investigating their role along with other aspects of the circumstances leading to Garg’s death.
Meanwhile, Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi has urged Parliament to confer the Bharat Ratna posthumously on Zubeen Garg, recognizing his immense contribution to Assamese music and culture. Garg, remembered nationally for his Bollywood hit “Ya Ali,” remains a cultural icon whose passing has left a deep void across the region.
