Srinagar, Dec 9: A severe cold wave has tightened its grip across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, with temperatures plummeting well below normal in most areas. Officials from the Meteorological Department reported that the ongoing dry spell has intensified chill, particularly during morning and evening hours.

In Kashmir Valley, Srinagar recorded sub-zero temperatures, while tourist destinations such as Gulmarg and Pahalgam witnessed sharp drops, freezing water bodies and disrupting daily life. Residents reported frost formation on roads and rooftops, adding to travel difficulties.

Ladakh continued to reel under extreme cold, with Leh and Kargil registering some of the lowest temperatures of the season. Authorities confirmed that heating arrangements have been strengthened in vulnerable areas, and advisories have been issued urging people to take precautions against frostbite and respiratory ailments.

In Jammu region, the cold wave has also tightened its hold, with foggy mornings and dipping mercury affecting normal routines. Officials said the chill has been compounded by the absence of significant rainfall, leaving the air dry and biting.

The Meteorological Department has forecast that the cold wave will persist in the coming days, with no major western disturbance expected immediately. Citizens have been advised to limit exposure during peak hours of cold and ensure adequate heating in homes and workplaces.

Authorities reiterated that emergency services are on alert to respond to weather-related incidents, while health officials urged residents to take preventive measures to safeguard against seasonal illnesses.
