Sagar Defence is preparing to set up India’s first autonomous maritime shipyard in Andhra Pradesh, a move seen as a significant boost to the country’s drive towards advanced maritime technology. The proposed facility will cater to the design, development and manufacturing of unmanned and autonomous vessels for defence, commercial and research purposes.
Company officials said the shipyard will focus on creating next-generation platforms powered by indigenous navigation, communication and control systems. The initiative is aimed at enhancing India’s capabilities in autonomous maritime operations while reducing reliance on foreign technologies in this fast-growing sector.
The facility is also expected to function as a centre for testing, integration and large-scale deployment of autonomous surface and underwater systems. It is likely to encourage collaboration with defence agencies, maritime operators and academic institutions engaged in marine robotics and automation.
State authorities have welcomed the proposal, observing that it complements Andhra Pradesh’s efforts to promote high-technology manufacturing and strengthen its maritime infrastructure. The project is expected to generate skilled employment and support the growth of the blue economy in the state.
Sagar Defence is expected to announce further details on timelines, investment and operational plans in the coming months.
