Srinagar, December 18: Zojila Pass, the vital high-altitude link connecting the Kashmir Valley with Ladakh, witnessed biting cold conditions on Thursday as the mercury plunged to minus 17 degrees Celsius, disrupting normal traffic movement and prompting authorities to impose temporary curbs.
Officials said the sharp drop in temperature led to the formation of thick layers of ice on the road surface, making driving extremely risky along the treacherous stretch. As a precaution, regulated traffic movement was enforced to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of commuters.
Due to the severe cold wave, only essential and convoy-based movement was allowed at certain hours, while non-essential travel was discouraged. Motorists were advised to strictly adhere to traffic advisories and avoid unnecessary journeys until conditions improve.
Road maintenance agencies and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) teams were deployed on standby to clear ice, spread anti-skid material, and ensure the route remains functional. Heavy machinery and snow clearance equipment have been positioned at vulnerable points to deal with sudden weather changes.
Authorities have urged travellers to check weather and traffic updates before planning their journey, warning that further restrictions may be imposed if temperatures continue to drop or weather conditions worsen in the coming days.
